Can You Reuse Vacuum Sealer Bags? What Makers Say

Some makers allow it. NESCO says to wash the bag in warm soapy water or on the dishwasher’s top rack, dry it thoroughly, and not reuse bags that held greasy food. FoodSaver says to leave one extra inch of bag for each planned reseal. No .gov or .edu source we opened covers reusing a vacuum bag after raw meat.

This guide is limited to what the makers and one extension source actually say. It covers washing, drying, extra bag length and the bags makers rule out, then lists what no source answers.

Can You Reuse Vacuum Sealer Bags?

It depends on the maker. We read four manuals: two give reuse rules and two say nothing. Washing a bag for new food and resealing a bag around the same food are different jobs.

NESCO VS-12Yes, with conditionsWash, rinse, dry thoroughly; no reuse after greasy food

How Do You Wash a Vacuum Sealer Bag for Reuse?

NESCO’s VS-12 Care and Use Guide is the clearest maker rule for washing a bag and filling it with new food. Its steps, in the guide’s order:

  1. Wash the bag material in warm water with dishwashing soap.
  2. Rinse it well.
  3. Dry it thoroughly before reusing.
  4. Or use the dishwasher: top rack only, bag turned inside out and standing so water gets in, then dry thoroughly.

The University of Georgia experts wrote about plastic sandwich and freezer bags, not vacuum bags. They say reuse is generally safe if the bag is properly washed, and that safe reuse depends on what the bag held and its condition. Their wash steps: use soap and water, scrub the seams, rinse, and dry completely.

The sources disagree on one step. NESCO lets you turn its bags inside out in the dishwasher. The Georgia experts say “Do not turn the bag inside out when washing” for sandwich and freezer bags. We show both and do not pick one; follow the manual for the bag in your hand.

How Much Extra Bag Do You Need to Reseal?

This is FoodSaver’s rule for resealing the same food, not for washing a bag and refilling it. The FoodSaver V4400 manual (2022 edition) says to allow one inch of bag material for each time you plan to open and reseal, in addition to the three inches of extra space you normally leave. The maker’s example is hard cheese.

The table is arithmetic from that rule, not a separate source claim.

Planned resealsExtra bag to allow
03 inches
13 + 1 = 4 inches
23 + 2 = 5 inches
33 + 3 = 6 inches

FoodSaver’s own editions differ on the base amount (the older copy we saw says 4 inches, not 3), so check the manual for your model.

Which Bags Should You Not Reuse?

  • NESCO: “Bags used to store greasy foods should not be re-used.”
  • Georgia experts (sandwich and freezer bags): bags that held any of the big nine allergens are not suitable for reuse, and the number of reuses depends on the material.
  • Weston and Avid Armor: their manuals say nothing on reuse.

What Does Vacuum Sealing Not Do?

UMaine Extension (a post by a Master Food Preserver volunteer, September 3, 2024) says vacuum sealing alone is not a method of food preservation and, unlike canning, does not make food shelf stable. Sealed food must still be stored properly on the shelf, in the refrigerator or in the freezer. It also says vacuum sealing removes oxygen and creates a barrier against additional pathogens, but does not kill pathogens already in the food, and that anaerobic pathogens such as botulism can still be present in a reduced oxygen package.

That page does not discuss reusing bags, so this is background on what a sealed bag cannot do, not a reuse rule.

How Should You Handle Raw Meat Around Bags and Sealers?

USDA FSIS (last updated March 11, 2025) says to wash hands with warm, soapy water for 20 seconds after handling raw meat, poultry or fish and their juices, and to wash every surface that touched raw meat with hot, soapy water before moving on. UMaine’s bulk-chicken walkthrough adds two habits for sealing raw meat: use a bag holder, and take care that neither the meat nor your hands touch the outside of the bag.

Neither page says whether a bag that held raw meat can be washed and reused, so that question stays on our list of things the sources do not answer.

What Do the Sources Not Say?

No source we opened answers these three questions:

  • Whether a bag that held raw meat, poultry or fish can be reused
  • How many times a vacuum bag can be reused
  • Which sanitizing method, if any, makes reuse safe

SAFETY: We found no .gov or .edu source that covers reusing a vacuum bag that held raw meat, poultry or fish. The Georgia advice is about plastic sandwich and freezer bags only. For anything raw, follow your sealer maker’s manual and treat the question as unanswered here.

Frequently Asked Questions

Each answer sticks to what the makers and the Georgia experts state.

How many times can you reuse vacuum sealer bags?

No maker or extension source here gives a number of safe reuses for vacuum bags. FoodSaver ties reuse to bag length: leave 3 inches above the food plus 1 inch for each planned reseal. Georgia experts say the number of reuses for plastic sandwich and freezer bags depends on the material.

Can you reuse FoodSaver vacuum sealer bags?

Yes, for resealing the same food. The FoodSaver V4400 manual tells you to make the bag extra long, adding one inch for every planned open-and-reseal on top of the usual 3 inches. Its example is hard cheese. The manual does not describe washing a bag and refilling it with different food, so follow your own model’s manual.

Can vacuum sealer bags go in the dishwasher?

NESCO says yes for its bags. Place them on the top rack, turned inside out and standing so water gets inside, then dry them thoroughly. The Georgia experts, writing about sandwich and freezer bags, say not to turn a bag inside out when washing. Weston and Avid Armor manuals are silent on this.
